Haida Sculpin - 9th January 2007

A few people have seen my site now and have commented on the "empty" spaces on my legs. Today I had one of those empty spaces filled. I found an image of a Sculpin which I think fits perfectly on my right calf. During the tattooing one of the other tattooists was kind enough to take a picture of the work in progress.

The ocean is a profound source of inspiration for Haida art. Many of the creatures found on family crest poles and other carved objects are drawn from the ocean. Killer whales, sea lions, halibut, sharks, sculpin and supernatural beings such as the Sea-wolf are some of these beings of the sea that Haida artists depict.

I already have a Sea-wolf (WASGO) picture ready to be tattooed on my right inner thigh later this year.

The end result: Haida Sculpin A real sculpin
